Teaching online comprises three components: course planning and design, course building in the Learning Management System (Brightspace), and course delivery (teaching). Chalk & Table offers training courses for faculty planning to teach online or blended courses.
FDC100 Getting Started in Brightspace
An introduction to the Brightspace integrated learning platform, including structure and navigation, how to add and edit content, how to communicate, and how to set up the gradebook and enter grades. This is an online, self-paced training course.
Zoom provides an online meeting room for synchronous (live) or asynchronous (recorded) class sessions. Students can use Zoom for live presentations in online courses. This platform is also used to hold class when an on-ground class session has had to be canceled. This is an online, self-paced training course.
FDC200 Learning to Teach Online
An overview of best practices related to online course facilitation, including building learning communities, developing social presence, engaging students, creating quality discussions, and incorporating active learning strategies. Participants are introduced to basic standards of the Quality Matters program. This is a four-week online training course with assignments totaling five to six hours due weekly. It is offered multiple times during the year.
FDC300 Design for Online
How to design or revise an online course to meet Quality Matters standards. QM offers research-based, nationally benchmarked standards of quality for online and blended courses. Participants will produce a fully developed course including syllabus and all components in the online Brightspace course site. FDC300 combines face-to-face and online training over a four-month period. It is offered three times per year: September (for spring semester courses); January (for summer semester courses); May (for fall semester courses). ***Pre-requisite: Participants must be contracted to create or revise a course for online delivery.
